Say goodbye to 2020 and hello to 2021! Let’s be honest, quarantine has been a time of staying in and devouring junk food. At Modern Wellness Bar, we’re here to help kick-off your 2021 detox, so you can feel great! If you follow us on Instagram, you probably have noticed our bright and blue smoothie bowls. Eating aesthetically pleasing food is always fun, but that’s not the reason we can’t stop eating these beautiful bowls. Spirulina; a blue algae, along with its potent health benefits, is the proper explanation.

What is Spirulina?

Spirulina is a type of natural blue algae- also known as cyanobacteria. It is an excellent source of protein for those eating a plant-based diet. It is available in pill, capsule, or powder form, perfect for cooking and blending in smoothies.

Why Should I Consume Spirulina?

New Year and new you, this nutrient-packed plant is perfect to begin 2021 feeling like the best version of yourself. Spirulina is a potent detoxifier. It can help your body filter out harmful toxins such as lead and mercury. Spirulina is packed with nutrients and has been helmed as “one of the most nutrient-dense foods.” Notable nutrients include:

Vitamin B1, B2, and B3

Also known as Thiamine, B1 is required for the body’s tissues to function the way they should. B2 is known for breaking down proteins, fats, and carbohydrates and also gives you energy. B3 may help in boosting brain function.

Iron

Iron is an essential mineral that can improve your concentration, boost your immunity, and help you get some much needed sound sleep.

Potassium

Potassium is another vital mineral required by your body. Ever have a muscle cramp and been told to “eat a banana”? That’s because Potassium can help calm muscle contractions and nerve signals. So, next time you have bad cramps, try a spirulina banana smoothie!

Protein

If you have been following a plant-based diet for a while, you already know that you don’t need animals for protein, contrary to popular belief. Plants work just fine! Spirulina is made up of essential amino acids and is a complete protein.

Calcium

Similar to the above point, milk isn’t the only source of calcium, and Spirulina is a perfect and even more potent source for those not drinking milk. So enjoy your pretty blue smoothie bowl for healthy bones!

How can I eat and drink Spirulina?

As we mentioned earlier, you can consume Spirulina in a pill or capsule form, but that’s boring! Here are some fun ways to benefit from the powerful sea plant.

Try Mermaid Toast

Sure peanut butter toast tastes good, but if you want to brighten up your breakfast or snack, you’ve got to to try Mermaid Toast.

Salad Dressing

Add 1-2 tablespoons to your dressing, and enjoy!
